How to Clean a Washable Dirt-Trapping Mat

A washable dirt-trapping mat works best when it is cleaned before the fibres become overloaded with mud, moisture, sand, and pet hair. The good news is that maintenance is simple if you follow the same routine each time.

Regular cleaning helps the mat dry faster, smell fresher, and keep its absorbency. It also makes the fibres stand back up so they can keep scrubbing dirt off shoes and paws at the door.

Step 1: Shake or vacuum first

Before washing, take the mat outside and shake out loose dirt. For indoor cleaning, a quick pass with a vacuum removes dry debris and pet hair so the wash cycle does not have to do all the work alone.

Step 2: Machine wash on gentle

Use mild detergent and a gentle cycle with cold or warm water. Avoid bleach and fabric softener because they can weaken absorbent fibres and reduce how well the mat traps moisture.

Step 3: Dry on low or air dry

High heat is hard on rubber backings, so low heat or air drying is the safest choice. Once the mat is fully dry, place it back where it gets the most traffic.

How often should you wash it?

In homes with pets, kids, or wet weather, weekly washing is usually enough. During dry seasons you may be able to stretch that to every two or three weeks, especially if you vacuum between washes.

If your mat needs an upgrade before the next muddy season, browse the current sizes on the Dirttrapper shop page.
